Joy

We live in a world that treats joy like a moving target.  We chase it in accomplishments. In vacations. In experiences. In relationships. We tell ourselves, “I’ll feel joyful when…” When life slows down. When the situation improves. When the pressure lifts.

But the problem with chasing joy is that it never stays caught.

David shows us a different way in Psalm 16. He doesn’t describe joy as something he is pursuing. He describes joy as something he possesses.  Not because his circumstances are perfect, but because his God is present.

Joy Begins with Where You Place Your Trust
David opens the Psalm with a simple declaration:  “Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.” (Psalm 16:1)  Refuge is a place of security, protection, and stability.  It's a fortress high above challenges and issues of the day.  That's why David’s joy is not rooted in ease. It is rooted in trust.

Joy begins when we stop looking to circumstances to hold us together and start trusting God to hold us steady.  When God becomes your refuge, joy becomes your foundation.

Joy Grows When God Becomes Your Greatest Treasure
David continues:  “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.” (Psalm 16:5) A portion was an inheritance, a future, and security.  David is saying, “God, You are enough for me.” This is where many of us struggle. We want God plus something else to be our joy.

God plus success.
God plus comfort.
God plus everything going the way we planned.

But David reminds us that lasting joy is not found in what God gives. It is found in God Himself.  When God is your portion, your joy becomes secure because He cannot be taken away.

Joy Deepens When You Remember God Is Always With You
David writes:  “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8)  Notice the connection. God’s presence produces stability. Joy does not come from a trouble-free life. It comes from a God who never leaves your life.

You may feel pressure, but you are not abandoned.  You may feel grief, but you are not alone.  You may feel uncertainty, but you are not without hope.  Joy grows when you remember God is near.

Joy Is the Result of Walking with God
David ends with one of the most powerful promises in Scripture:  “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:11)

Joy is not found at the end of a perfect path. It is found in the presence of a perfect God.
Notice where joy is located.  Not in circumstances.  Not in success.  Not in comfort.  In His presence.

This changes everything.

Joy is not something you achieve. It is something you experience as you walk with Him.
Joy isn’t something you chase.  It’s something you receive.  When God is your refuge, your treasure, and your constant companion, joy becomes your reality, not your reward.

You may not always feel happy.  But you can live with joy.  Because joy is not based on what is happening around you.  It is based on who is walking with you.
