Jesus is Lord.

The story of Jesus’ birth is a moment in history that changed history and still inspires us to live God-pleasing lives today because of who Jesus is. In Luke 1:39-56, we see Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth shortly after the angel Gabriel announces that she will give birth to Jesus. This passage offers rich lessons in faith, joy, and trust in God’s promises. It reveals the importance of community, faith-filled praise, and recognizing God’s hand in our lives.

A Community of Faith
When Mary arrives at Elizabeth’s home, something remarkable happens. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, recognizes the significance of Mary’s pregnancy, and the baby in Elizabeth’s womb (John the Baptist) leaps for joy (v. 41). Elizabeth blesses Mary, saying, “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (v. 45).

This scene highlights the importance of faith-filled relationships. Mary and Elizabeth share in each other’s joy and encourage one another in their faith. In our own lives, we are not meant to journey alone. God places people in our paths—family, friends, fellow believers—to support and encourage us. Elizabeth’s affirmation strengthens Mary’s faith, and together they celebrate God’s work.

Application: Surround yourself with people who encourage your faith. In difficult times, seek out those who will remind you of God’s promises and help you trust in His plan. Likewise, be a source of encouragement for others, celebrating how God is working in their lives.
Faith in God’s Promises

Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith: “Blessed is she who believed” (v. 45). Mary’s belief in God’s promises sets her apart. Despite the overwhelming nature of the angel’s announcement—that she would bear the Son of God—Mary trusted in God’s word. Her faith allows her to experience the fulfillment of God’s promises firsthand.

This is a powerful reminder that God’s promises are sure, even when they seem impossible. Mary was a young woman from a small town, facing a situation that could bring shame and uncertainty, yet she trusted that God would work through her. Her faith was not passive but active—she acted on it by visiting Elizabeth, seeking confirmation and support.

Application: Trust that God’s promises will come to pass, even when circumstances seem challenging. Reflect on God’s faithfulness in the past as a foundation for trusting Him in the present. When you face uncertainty, pray for the faith to believe in God’s promises, just as Mary did.

A Song of Praise
In response to Elizabeth’s blessing, Mary bursts into praise with the famous Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Her song exalts God for His mighty deeds, His mercy, and His faithfulness to His people. Mary praises God for lifting up the humble and bringing down the proud, recognizing that God’s ways are often contrary to human expectations.
Mary’s song teaches us that praise is the appropriate response to God’s work in our lives. Even before Jesus is born, Mary rejoices in what God is doing. Her praise is deeply personal yet also universal, reflecting God’s care for the marginalized and oppressed.

Application: Take time to praise God for His faithfulness in your life. Even when challenges arise, remember that God is at work behind the scenes. Like Mary, let your response to God’s grace be one of gratitude and joy. Reflect on the ways God has lifted you up or shown you mercy, and share your testimony with others.

The story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth is a powerful example of faith, community, and praise. For modern Christians, it offers practical lessons: surround yourself with a faith-filled community, trust in God’s promises, and respond to His work in your life with gratitude. Just as Mary trusted and rejoiced in God’s plan, we too are called to live lives of faith and praise, confident in God’s power and goodness.
