The One Who Notices

Often overshadowed by his more prominent brother, Peter, Andrew plays a significant role in the Gospels. While glimpses into his life are brief, they offer valuable lessons for us on how to notice others so that we see needs and meet needs in the name of Jesus.

THE SEEKER AND THE CONNECTOR WHO POINTED OTHERS TO JESUS
Andrew, a fisherman from Bethsaida, first appears alongside John the Baptist [John 1:35-42]. He readily identifies Jesus as the Messiah and brings his brother, Peter, to meet him. This highlights Andrew's character – a spiritual seeker who doesn't hesitate to share the Messiah with his closest family. This wouldn't be the last time that Andrew personally connected people with Jesus. It was the pattern of His life. He was a man who took initiative so that others would know Christ.

Andrew also plays a crucial role in the Gospel of John when some Greeks approach Philip, desiring to see Jesus [John 12:20-22]. Here, Andrew becomes a bridge, facilitating the encounter between other seekers and Jesus. Phillip may have been concerned that these "outsiders" wanted to meet with Jesus. Andrew knew that he, too, was an "outsider" once, so he took them to Jesus without hesitation.  It's easy to notice the differences that divide us from others, but Andrew didn't notice differences; he noticed the common need for a Savior.  With the common need, there is no division that Jesus can't overcome!

While there are no recorded messages from Andrew in the Bible, his life preaches the truth that simply connecting others with Jesus is the most impactful thing we can do.

BEYOND OUR COMFORT ZONE
Another instance showcasing Andrew's initiative is when a young boy offers five loaves and two fish to feed the multitude [John 6:8-9]. While others might have scoffed at the meager offering, Andrew brings it to Jesus, trusting in his ability to perform miracles. This teaches us to step outside our comfort zones and offer what we have, even if it seems insignificant.

Faith combined with action can create extraordinary outcomes.

THE UNASSUMING LEADER
While Andrew often takes a backseat to Peter, leadership isn't always about being the center of attention. Sometimes, it's about recognizing opportunities, taking initiative, and creating connections.

Andrew's life reminds us that each of us plays a vital role in the bigger picture,
contributing to the spread of the Gospel in unique ways.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

Andrew's life offers several takeaways for believers today:
  • Keep Seeking: Like Andrew, we must continue to pursue the Lord and seek His truth in Scripture. There's always more to learn and discover about our faith.
  • Share Your Faith: Don't be afraid to share your faith with those around you. It can be as simple as inviting a friend to a church service or talking about how your beliefs impact your life.
  • Bring People Together: Just as Andrew connected the Greeks with Jesus, we can play a role in connecting others in Christ-centered relationships.
  • Trust in God's Ability: Even when things seem inadequate, trust that God can work through our small offerings and actions.

So, the next time you hear Andrew's name, remember him not just as Peter's brother but as an inspiring example of a seeker, connector, and quiet leader whose actions continue to inspire us today.
