How much faith is enough faith? The answer to this question is counterintuitive. Logically, to trust God for big things, we need to have big faith, but that's not exactly what Jesus taught. Read it for yourself.
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
So, how much faith is enough faith? Faith the size of the tiniest of tiny seeds - the mustard seed. Jesus teaches that even when our faith is small there is big potential. He says small faith can move mountains with a word. Just to be clear, the power of faith isn't in our words, but in the One, we are trusting. Our words don't have power, but the God we are trusting does even when our faith seems small!
Without a right understanding of faith, we get stuck. We don't have the courage to do what God has called us to do. We don't have the boldness to live obediently. We don't have the strength to keep going. All of this is because we think that a little faith isn't enough faith.
Let's get personal. Jesus says that with a little faith then nothing is impossible for you. With a little faith, you can follow Jesus. With a little faith, you can live a radically obedient life. With a little faith, you can endure whatever you are going through. With a little faith, you can trust God big!
Catch Jesus' teaching in Matthew 13:31-32 and see how a little faith is a big deal: He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
How can this be? Jesus meets us where we are with big faith or small faith and says trust me. When our faith is small like the mustard seed, we trust Him and watch our faith take root and grow. We see our small faith grow as we see the faithfulness of God.
