PARENTING AFFIRMATION
The work of parenting is honorable, righteous, and significant. Colossians 3:23, 1 Peter 4:10-11
READ MATTHEW 6:16-18
16 “When you go without eating, do not look gloomy like those who only pretend to be holy. They make their faces look very sad. They want to show people they are fasting. What I’m about to tell you is true. They have received their complete reward. 17 But when you go without eating, put olive oil on your head. Wash your face. 18 Then others will not know that you are fasting. Only your Father, who can’t be seen, will know it. Your Father will reward you, because he sees what you do secretly. Matthew 6:16-18
DISCUSS IT
As we have looked at the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5-7, we have seen ways that Jesus says we can be different and better because we are followers of the way, Jesus. Prayer and fasting help us draw closer to Jesus and help to define us as disciples of Christ.
FAMILY ACTIVITY
Make a list of things each family member is willing to give up for a week. During this time, encourage each other and check to see how everyone is doing with this challenge? Are you just pretending? Are you using this time to spend worshiping and praying? When you are done, evaluate what God taught you and how you saw Him work in and around you.

- What is fasting? Do you have to not eat or drink anything? Why?
- What does fasting help us with? (focusing on God and our relationship with Him)
- Jesus points out that when we do things differently, like fasting, we should not pretend. What does pretending to fast show others?
- If you were to fast, what would you be willing to give up for a time in order to focus on God/Jesus in a new way?
