Loving the Unlovable

Series Focus:  Love Like Jesus
Use this guide to lead your family.  In each guide, you will find a parenting affirmation to help you focus on God's call on you as a parent/guardian.  Then, you will find a Scripture passage from the New International Reader's Version of the Bible.  When you are done reading, there are discussion questions to help your family talk about what you read.  Feel free to add to or skip  questions as time allows.  At some point during the week, it would be extra special to plan to do the optional Family Activity.

Parenting Affirmation: I will live in the moment today by engaging with and loving my kids with abandon.  Read Psalms 118:24

Read:13 Once again Jesus went out beside the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd came to him. He began to teach them. 14 As he walked along he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus. Levi was sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him. Levi got up and followed him.

15 Later Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house. Many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples. They were part of the large crowd following Jesus. 16 Some teachers of the law who were Pharisees were there. They saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors. So they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 Jesus heard that. So he said to them, “Those who are healthy don’t need a doctor. Sick people do. I have not come to get those who think they are right with God to follow me. I have come to get sinners to follow me.  Mark 2:13-17

Discussion Questions:
Jesus loved all kinds of people.  Someone help me understand why the tax collectors are sinners.

We are adding to our list of people we need to love:  neighbors, people who need help now and sinners.  WOW!  What a list!

Who thinks it is hard to love everyone?  Why/why not?
What makes it so hard?
How can we help each other love others better?
As we add to our list of people we want to focus on loving this year, who can we add on the list today, that we consider sinners who need to know Jesus?  (family, friends, people at school or work)
Instead of concentrating on the ways that we see sin in their lives, how can we show Jesus' love to them?

Family Activity:  On your “People to Love” list add people who you know need to know Jesus.  Talk about ways you can show them Jesus every time you are with them.  If you are having a hard time figuring out who to put on your list, talk to your campus leaders for opportunities to share Jesus with others through the church, missions, or in our community.  Maybe you and your family could sign up to serve at an Easter Party with your campus.
